This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I believe every child deserves the opportunity for an excellent education, and I am proud to partner with my school, other educators, families, and community leaders to strive toward this goal. I teach in a high poverty school zone in which 100% of our students receive free breakfast and lunch. These amazing students need additional support because most of them come from low-income single family households of which many have little to no support or resources. Despite some of the challenges they face in and around their environment, every year my students come to school excited, full of life, and eager to learn.
As the 2016 and 2019 Teacher of the Year as well as an alumni of Metro Atlanta Teach for America, I choose to continue to significantly impact the life trajectories of students in our region’s high-need communities.
My Project
Many of my students come to school without eating breakfast and can't afford to bring snacks for recess. A lot of times, they have a very hard time concentrating because their stomachs hurt. When they are hungry, they are distracted, irritable, and sometimes sleepy.
These healthy snacks will fill my student's stomachs, help them refocus, and make sure they are ready to learn.
Students will be able to have mid morning snacks, recess snacks, afternoon snacks and after school snacks. Hunger will no longer be on their minds throughout the school day. Thank you for helping me fill my students tummies!
