Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Each day, my students face challenges, before they enter the school building, ranging from extreme poverty, single-parent households, where the parent works multiple jobs, students with incarcerated parents, and many students who live in shelters.
Despite these challenges, my students come to school each day, and I do my best to provide an emotionally, supportive environment to foster academic success.
Concentrating on academics and responding to situations with patience is difficult for my students and especially challenging when they are hungry.
My Project
I am a our school's counselor seeking funding for healthy snacks for my hungry students.
"Hangry" students come into my office at all times of the day.
Sometimes the child hasn't eaten breakfast at home and missed the school breakfast because they were late or they skip lunch because they didn't like the school cafeteria choices.
The solution to what can appear to be a serious issue always starts with me asking, "Have you eaten?" Students often share that their breakfast or lunch has been candy or chips. It's no surprise that soon after their snack they are grumpy and falling asleep in class.
With so many of my students being overweight, I would like to have a variety of healthy bars and snacks in my office to provide when students need a quick energy boost to get them back on the path for emotional and academic success.
