Our middle school library is just two years old, most of that time has been during the pandemic. Steadily, we have been building a collection that reflects the diverse population of our educational community, filling one shelf at a time with books that take reflect the rich cultural backgrounds of our students and staff. We've also recently opened for after school hours, giving students a safe, friendly place to work and read.
Our students are curious and caring, eager to make their mark on the world, and just beginning to realize that our community circles are getting larger - class, school, city, country, world.
They are so excited to be in the library, to choose their own books and read with friends! They are beginning to direct their own learning and it is exciting to watch them grow.
My Project
Our new school library is open many days after school. Students come to borrow books or read, complete homework assignments or work with their friends. By the time they arrive after the last class bell, lunch is a distant memory. Approximately 80% of our students qualify for free or reduced price lunch. They often do not have snack from home or money to purchase one.
We need a variety of small, healthy snacks such as granola bars and fruit roll-ups to keep hardworking students from feeling hunger.
Students should be able to stay to complete their schoolwork without worrying about rumbling stomachs.
