This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

Our scholars are from predominantly low-income communities in Washington, DC. I strive to make my classroom a community that nurtures the whole child, emphasizing both academic and personal excellence. Our scholars deserve the same chances as their wealthy peers in the suburbs, but lack many essential classroom supplies to be successful. Only 7% of our students are currently on grade level in math.

We aim to close the achievement gap one child at a time.

In order to do this, our students need someone to believe in them and invest in them.

My Project

With 100% of our students on free lunch, our students often suffer from food insecurity. It is extraordinarily difficult to focus on learning when you're unsure when your next meal will be. Additionally, scholars often lack basic supplies like pencils. I already often provide snacks and other basic supplies to scholars out of pocket, but this becomes rapidly expensive.

No student should need to worry about going hungry at school.

Sometimes, a small snack in the afternoon can be the difference between being able to focus on your math and not. My scholars need healthy snacks and pencils in order to fully access their coursework.
