This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
The students in my class are a wonderful group of children. They love to learn new things and to experience new opportunities. My students face barriers that can potentially hinder their educational progress. Many of them come from high-poverty families. There are students of every racial background in our school. Some of the students are learning to speak English at school and speak other languages at home. Some of them are from other countries such as Honduras, Mexico, Somalia, Bosnia, Sierra Leone, and Nigeria. Others have special needs.
Our school is a second home for many of the children.
It is where they feel safe and loved and know that they can try new things.
Education is very important to the families at our school. They chose our school, a neighborhood charter school, because of its diversity, high standards for behavior, and excellent instruction. Our school is very much a community. There are about 400 students in our school in grades kindergarten through eighth grade. All of the children in our school come from the local historic urban neighborhood.
My Project
Our school day is very long. The children have breakfast at 7:40 and have lunch at 12:05. Then, they go home at 3:30. In between those times, there is a lot of learning, playing and growing happening. All of that makes the children very hungry! Our class has snack every day. The snack helps the children to refill their bodies and fuel their minds.
Some of the children bring their own snacks, but most cannot afford it.
The teacher fills the gap, buying healthy snacks at the grocery store each week. However, this gets expensive! Please help by donating healthy snacks like goldfish crackers, fruit snacks, granola bars and fruit pouches to our classroom so that all of the children can have the food to fuel their growing bodies and minds.
