My school is one of the largest comprehensive high schools in Oakland. My school serves a student population that is racially diverse and predominately low-income, with 77.9% of the students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch. My students experience violence, trauma, and massive inequity daily, both within and outside of school.
My students are ready and eager to learn.
They understand the systemic and institutional forces that oppress them, and they work daily to find solutions, not just here, but in their own communities in Oakland. They recognize that inequality permeates the world of education, especially within the school district where $13.1 million dollars has just been slashed from the budget. At our school alone, almost half a million dollars was cut. This is the most of any school in the school district.
Students see this, and they understand that their education has not been valued the same as that of other students. They are angry, and they are ready to change the world. They need your help getting there.
My Project
It's that time of the year again - we desperately need more healthy, filling snacks for our classroom to welcome the incoming freshmen class! Every day, students come to school without eating breakfast before school. This makes it really hard to focus and learn in class! Often, when students are unable to get food, they end up sleeping in class and struggling to pay attention.Due to the large size of our campus, students are unable to get food throughout the day from our cafeteria!
These snacks are invaluable in supporting hungry students, both past and present, in their drive to get the most out of their education.
They deserve the opportunity and supports to learn!
