Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I work with students from Central America (Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras) and Mexico. These students are called Newcomer students and have recently arrived in the US from their home country. Our school is divided into a regular high school program and a sheltered Newcomer program. Most of my students are English learners who speak Spanish or Mam.
Granola bars and other healthy snacks that allay hunger are essential; they allow students to relax, feel comfort, and be able to focus in class.
The school in general is part of the larger East Bay community. Many students in this area do not have budget for buying school supplies and healthy snacks.
My Project
I would like to offer students healthy snacks and re-useable water bottles. We are starting a unit soon about the importance on protecting our natural habitats. I would like to teach students about using re-useable water bottles during this unit. In addition, we are taking a field trip to collect trash at a local lake. I would like to show students how to properly dispose of trash in order to protect waterways for wildlife. I hope to motivate students with the water bottle and food giveaway.
My students often come to school without breakfast, and some refuse to eat school lunch (because they don't like it).
While it might sound ridiculous, often times a granola bar from a teacher is all that they eat during the school day.
