Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I work in an underprivileged neighborhood where most of my students come from low-income households and lack basic necessities. A lot of them have gone through traumatic events, which may include emotional, physical and/or sexual abuse, domestic violence, family history of substance abuse or mental illness, homelessness, divorce, abandonment, foster care placement, etc.
A lot of my students lack basic necessities such as healthy snacks, clean water, hygiene and cleaning supplies to prevent spreading of germs.
Many of them come to school tired, hungry and some look disheveled. This interferes with their concentration, and their ability to maintain meaningful relationships with peers.
My Project
The water in the school building is polluted and many of the water fountains are concealed to prevent the students from ingesting the water. They need non-sugary drinks to quench their thirst in school.
These materials will help my students combat hunger and thirst during school hours, which will enhance their ability to concentrate and function in school, and the disinfecting supplies will prevent the spreading of germs.
Sometimes they come to school hungry or become hungry before lunchtime. A healthy snack will help them satisfy their hunger until lunch. When they are hungry many times they become restless, irritable, and unable to concentrate in the learning process. Providing them with healthy snacks will alleviate the hunger so they can continue to learn in a nurturing environment.
