My Students
When I look at my school population of students, the one thing I notice is how culturally diverse they are. I have students who come from Mexico, Africa, Asia, and Polynesian Islands. I work at a Title I school where 89% of the students qualify to receive free lunch. Most of my students come from low-income homes where they experience many struggles daily. But do they show this? No, they show me that the world will not bring them down and that they are excited to learn something new every day when they walk into my room.
My Project
As middle schoolers, life tends to be pretty chaotic. No matter the circumstance, they all have days where they forget or lack access to certain hygiene needs or food needs. Whether it be something small like forgetting to eat or having access to breakfast. On a daily basis, I hear from my students about their hungry needs. Covid has made it a struggle to keep food in a lot of our students home because of lay offs and reduced work hours. I want to be able to create a safe space where they can ask for something to eat without feeling any shame.
Funding for this project will provide a safe and normalized space in my classroom where students will have access to feel safe to discuss their hunger needs knowing I am always willing to help without judgement.
No student should have to worry about hygiene needs or hunger needs being unmet, no matter the reason why. Therefore, this project will ensure all my students know exactly where to go when inevitably, life gets a little chaotic again. Thank you for your consideration in supporting our wonderful students.
This project will provide me access to hand out snacks to my students when my students get hungry throughout the day. I plan on handing them out for awards as well.
