The urban school that I teach at, is located in a historical area of the city and services a lower economic population with 100% of the students qualifying for free lunches. The student population is composed of a diverse population that work extremely well together. Unfortunately, this community has been one of the hardest areas in the country hit by the opiate crisis. Consequently, many of my students have been traumatized and need experiences that help them to build a sense of belonging and self-worth. This is my twentieth year teaching at this school and I am so grateful to be able to work with this population of students. While they face some of lives hardest challenges it doesn't define them because they are kind, caring, funny, inventive, curious, enthusiastic, and so much more.
Students will use the folders and storage boxes for their data. Students utilize the data to monitor and manage their accomplishments and to establish goals. Managing their own data allows students to become active participants in their education.
Students are the priority in the classroom and making sure that the classroom is designed for their success is critical.
Classroom procedures are particularly important to my students. Procedures not only help save time and keep the classroom running smoothly but also helps to establish a safe structured environment that many of my students need in order to thrive. The rolling office organizer students will use to store materials such as colored pencils, markers, and scissors. These will allow them to be rolled out when needed and stored away neatly when not in use. The Clorox wipes, soap, and hand sanitizer will be used to keep the science classroom and students clean. My students frequently do not have access to health care so establishing healthy habits is important. Healthy students will increase attendance and academic success!
