Our school, an inclusive community that strongly advocates for the rights of students with special needs, effectively engages English learners and accommodates students with emotional and sensory needs. 60% of our students are receiving free or reduced lunch. Most of my first graders come from immigrant families where English is their second language. As a school, we have limited funding for supplies and academic materials.

I have an energetic, engaging and vibrant class of beautiful first graders with diverse ethnic and economic backgrounds. Our class will celebrate many milestones throughout this year, like learning to read and write, losing their first tooth, and making new friends. As their educator, my goal is to find resources that will help my students be confident with their fundamental skills: reading, writing, computing, and exploring. Children learn more engagingly when it is relevant to them. We must allow them to explore, take risks and see what happens.
My Project
Technology is used in our classroom as a tool for reaching all learners by helping them read, write, practice math computations and learn their phonics. In my first grade class, we learn in different Language Arts centers: Phonics, Writing, Reading and Listening center. Each center has activities for students to do independent work. My students will explore Reading Eggs, Myon, Mathletics and Mathseeds. These iPads with headphones will create a more engaging and modern classroom for my students. It will allow for differentiation of instruction so that I can support their individual needs. Furthermore, these iPads will help to promote STEM education (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) and can help students to become technologically literate and be ready for the Next Generation Science Standards expectations. Ultimately, my goal is to produce and encourage my students to develop a love for learning and equip them with most up-to-date tools necessary to succeed.

Having three iPads in our classroom would allow me to set up an independent learning center where all students would have access to our daily literacy rotation. The numerous learning apps will help our students to reach their math and language arts learning goals. Let’s equip our children with interactive tools to prepare them for what they will all use in the future and allow them to become more tech savvy.
