My students need "Health Matters: The Exercise and Nutrition Health Education Curriculum for People with Developmental Disabilities," as well supplies to increase personal health.
My students are special in countless ways and are also students with severe special needs. From Autism, to Cerebral Palsy and Downs Syndrome, all of my students are diagnosed with severe cognitive and physical disabilities that impact their ability to be involved in general education curriculum. Our school is a charter high school made up of an extremely diverse population of students. The students in my class are learning functional academics as well as social and communication skills.
My students are fun-loving, caring, gregarious, adventurous, silly, considerate, and unwaveringly genuine people.
My students are very fortunate to be enrolled at a school that appreciates these qualities and promotes inclusion. Our school encourages general education students to become active role-models in the lives and education of students with special needs. General education students volunteer to work with my students and provide 1-1 support for students during all of their daily activities.
I know that every teacher thinks this, but I really do have the best group of students in the world!!!
My Project
During summer school, a student made me aware that she was embarrassed to get into the swimming pool because she thought people would make fun of her- she told me that she didn't want to be fat anymore. I asked if she wanted to learn how to be healthy, and she worked with me to find an exercise curriculum that would be the most motivational so she could work on getting healthy everyday- “Health Matters: The Exercise and Nutrition Health Education Curriculum for People with Developmental Disabilities”. In order to address her full needs, we agreed that it is more than just how your body looks- it is about what you put into your body and how you take care of yourself that makes you a healthy person. The materials requested for this project will be used for a daily exercise block with my students. With the materials, the students will participate in exercise specifically designed for people with disabilities for 80 minutes/day. The curriculum we found also includes healthy nutrition education that will teach all the students make better nutrition choices in their day. The final component is for students to learn how to maintain a healthy body using the “My Body, Myself” books.
The impact that these materials will have on the overall health and wellness of my students is immeasurable and with your donations my students will be able to face the challenges in their day with confidence and pride!
