My students need basketballs to participate in Hoops for Heart, a fundraiser activity for the American Heart Association. They will also be learning about how to live a heart-healthy lifestyle!
My students are by far the most inspiring people in my life! Many of them live in poverty, are victims of trauma, or living away from loved ones as newcomers to our country from all around the world. They are an inspiration because they are resilient. Despite their hardships, each morning I am greeted with hugs and an eagerness to learn.
In order for my students to have the best possible lives, I must not only instill them with a thirst for knowledge but also the skills that they need to become healthy adults.
That is why I have taken on a new role in addition to that of a classroom teacher. I am our school's first Wellness Champion and I am determined to raise awareness and transform the culture of our school into a healthier place for our kids to spend most of their time outside of their homes.
Our school is a Title 1 school and 100% of our students receive free lunch. For most of them, the school is the only place where they are offered fresh produce and encouraged to be active.
My Project
We are working on becoming not only smarter, but healthier in order to feel good as adults!
My students need basketballs to participate in a community service project for the American Heart Association, Hoops for Heart.
If my kids are able to have enough basketballs to participate in Hoops for Heart, they will not only participate in raising awareness about the number one cause of death for both men and women globally but will learn how to make wise choices for their own hearts. After all, 80% of heart illnesses are preventable with just a few lifestyle changes!
