Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"An investment in knowledge always pays the best interest."-Benjamin Franklin
This quote is my favorite because it is so true. We need non-fiction books to help my students become informed about making healthy choices, especially with respect to food and exercise.
Our school is a Title 1 (high poverty) school in an urban setting.
The students are in fourth grade and their bodies are changing. They need to make informed choices of the foods they eat and how their choices will affect their health now and later in life. They are curious and active students who love to have their questions answered.
My Project
The books that were chosen are non-fiction, and therefore are aligned with the Common Core Standards. Students will learn to make better food choices and become aware that their habits today will affect them for the rest of their lives. Students will better understand their changing bodies and gain an understanding of the importance of personal hygiene, and getting enough exercise on a daily basis.
In the neighborhood in which I teach, there is a lack of knowledge of healthy food choices.
Frying foods is a common way to prepare almost any meal. Once the students become accustomed to eating salty, fatty foods, it will be difficult for them to change their preferences once they become adults. There are many fast food restaurants in the area and the students have a sedentary lifestyle as well. In my class, approximately 20% of my students are obese, and they're fourth grade students!
