My classroom consists of an amazing group of students with multiple disabilities and/or autism. We focus a great deal on adaptive living skills in our curriculum. I teach in an urban setting and 100% of my students receive a free breakfast and free lunch. Unfortunately, many of my students do not have consistent access to hygiene materials and supplies so they are unable to practice essential daily hygiene routines.
My students would benefit from hygiene products so we can practice essential daily living skills both in and out of the classroom.
This will enable this amazing group of students to feel clean, confident and successful!
My Project
A student's growth and development is a top priority. Growth and development, however, is extremely difficult without basic life skills such as daily hygiene routines and practices. Assisting students in developing a daily hygiene routine is not possible without proper supplies for each student. When each student's basic needs are met, they develop confidence in themselves which translates into confidence in the classroom.
Practicing a healthy daily routine when students are young is such an essential life skill.
It is our hope that these skills will create lifelong healthy habits.
Each student will receive a visual schedule and checklist so they can self-monitor their own habits to increase their independence. Toothpaste, toothbrushes, deodorant, lotion, and combs have been requested so that each day, students can practice daily hygiene skills. Therapy brushes have been requested for students with sensory needs. In addition, we will begin the hygiene unit by reading the personal hygiene book listed below. We will reinforce these skills with both positive reinforcement and the use of social stories.
We are so enthusiastic to put these goals into practice!
