Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach at an ethnically and linguistically diverse Title I school in East Oakland where over 90% of students receive free or reduced price lunch. A majority of students speak Spanish at home, and in order to better serve our community, we are moving towards becoming a dual immersion school. In 2018-2019, kindergarten and 1st grade are dual immersion, and next year 2nd grade will be as well.
My room is filled with the most brilliant second graders you'll ever meet.
Most students come from families with limited educational backgrounds, and our school culture is oriented towards ensuring that all our scholars are able to achieve their full potential. We value strong school-community relationships, and work together with parents/guardians to ensure a bright future for every child.
My Project
On occasion, our classroom hits temperatures over 90 degrees. Far more frequently, it hovers somewhere in the 80s -- still far above an ideal temperature for adult human beings, much less children. The water fountains in our classroom and just outside in the hall are available for students, but the taste of the water and rational concerns about germs make them unappealing. Additionally, using the fountains means disrupting the flow of learning -- especially when it's not one or two students needing a sip, but the whole class.
My second graders do their best to learn in spite of the challenges, but being sweaty, parched, and hungry is not a recipe for scholastic success.
A few students bring water bottles from home and fill them up in the fancy, clean water system available in the cafeteria. This project will allow me to get water bottles into the hands of ALL my students -- which will be better for their learning and our classroom culture. What's more, students who get to school late often miss out on breakfast in the cafeteria. Others simply have hunger pains throughout the morning or in the late afternoon. Being able to provide students with a few quick, (relatively) healthy options will help those kiddos get their brains back to the task of learning.
