Help me give my students an opportunity for a fun and exciting recess time. We need activities such as the Double Dutch Jump Ropes, Paddle Catch Game, Frisbies, and other Outdoor games to allow us to collaborate with our peers while exercising at recess.
I work in a Title I School and we are located in a high poverty area of the district. Over 60% of our students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. On a daily basis we are working to help our students learn while overcoming obstacles such as language, hunger, and home life issues.
Tell me and I forget; Teach me and I remember; Involve me and I learn.
This is the most powerful approach that I try to implement in my classroom. I want to create a math classroom that engages students and challenges their minds.
Many of our students have not left the boundaries of town. Our students have limited experience to the outside world. Our school district recognizes this and is investing in the future of our students. This year, our school has become a STEM school focused on Biomedical Science, Computer Science, and Engineering Design. This is a huge opportunity to allow students to see the opportunities that will exist if they work hard.
My Project
We need equipment to help facilitate an exciting and safe recess time. The other day at recess, one of my students picked up an old, wet Frisbee from the corner of the playground. He and many other boys quickly began playing. They didn't care how 'gross' it was...they just wanted to play.
Think about your most favorite recess activity and think about the excitement and joy you felt.
I want my students to have this same experience. Unfortunately, we have had to ban sports balls such as soccer, football, and basketball because of problems with not working together.
My hope is that I can find activities such as the paddle catch game and the ball scoop to teach the kids to work together while also focusing on enjoying their time. I am hoping that once we learn collaboration and communication through smaller activities, we can reintroduce the team sports again.
