I work with students grades K-5. Most of my students come from poverty stricken homes and have no idea what it means to live a healthy lifestyle. To no fault of their own they do not know how to control their emotions, eat healthy, or make good choices because of their home life situation. My students are very eager to learn a more healthy lifestyle with the challenges of today being bombarded with media images of fast-food , video games, tobacco, drugs, and violence which all cause stress on their minds, body and emotions.
I want to inspire healthy lifestyles and lifelong healthy habits , by teaching them to be more proactive in their daily choices.
I want the health room to be a place they feel comfortable having an open discussion about any issue and find possible solutions.
As a first teacher in this position, there were few updated supplies available to me. I'm hoping to purchase technology to use to research topics to find community resources and keep my curriculum updated
In my class, we have a lot of open discussions on healthy habits. I talk to the students and explain the best I can. Having a way to stream videos will help them better understand each topic. Hearing about it and seeing are two different things.
My first graders have been discussing safety.
The topic of the week is bicycle safety. We have had an open discussion and colored works sheets on bicycle safety. If I had a way to stream videos, I could watch a bicycle safety video with them. Watching the video not only talks about it but it also demonstrates using students their age.
Each grade level is discussing a way to live a healthy life. Having access to research new materials and stream videos will help educate me so I can better educate them.
