“Mathematics expresses values that reflect the cosmos, including orderliness, balance, harmony, logic, and abstract beauty.” -Deepak Chopra
I teach 8th grade math to special education and general education students. Many of my students are "hands on" learners.
My co-teacher and I encourage our students to try their best and to inquire about everything they can. We want them to understand the way to succeed in the world they are becoming a part of. As they explore, they need to have the necessary supplies to experiment with different mediums, not just the technological world.
Many of my eighth grade students come to school hungry, which affects their concentration and effort in school.
Many of my students take the bus to school and get in too late to take advantage of the breakfast program. Others work through their lunch periods and miss lunch altogether. Several students made the suggestion of keeping healthy snacks in the classroom for these situations.
Having essential healthy snacks available for my students will help them to be more successful in the classroom. When students are hungry and are feeling weak, it shows in their demeanor. They are unable to complete their basic math tasks. Having access to chips, cookies, fruit snacks, and nuts on hand will allow me to keep them full and focused!
In Their Own Words
The goal we are trying to accomplish is to get our classroom some healthy snacks. Some of us take the bus to school, and we don't have time to eat in the morning. It would be great if we could have access to to some healthy snacks so we can make it to lunch period.
Several of my other teachers have gotten funding through Donor's Choose. Sometimes Ms. Saladino brings in snacks, but we suggested, "Why not ask Donors Choose for help?" There are other teachers that have gotten snacks funded too. A few of us students got together to write this project. This project will be the springboard for future projects we will write for our classroom.
Besides coming late to school and missing breakfast, some of us do not go to lunch period. We go to our ELA or math teacher for extra help during that period and miss our lunch. Having a healthy snack available will keep our stomachs full. This will help keep us focused in class. Also, sometimes we just want something "sweet" and fun instead of the usual granola so we are asking for some treats too!
DonorsChoose is the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
As a teacher-founded nonprofit, we're trusted by thousands of teachers and supporters across the country. This classroom request for funding was created by Ms. Saladino and reviewed by the DonorsChoose team.
