Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a Special Education Manager from in an inner city neighborhood. Our scholars have a diverse range of needs, with disabilities ranging from learning, social emotional, and cognitive needs. My school has an innovative education model offering a continuum of education for children as young as six weeks of age through fifth grade. Many of our scholars also qualify for ELL services, and 95% of the scholars qualify for free or reduced-price lunch.
Our scholars come to school every day excited and ready to learn.
My goal is to find innovative, creative, and personalized resources to best meet their individual needs. Despite their challenges, they work hard and are eager to learn! We are very thankful for your support and generous donations.
My Project
Can you focus and attain to a task when you are hungry? I know I cannot and that is why I am sure to pack a nutritious lunch and snacks for my workday. But the families I serve often struggle in this area. My students come in the morning hungry or need a mid-day snack. Hunger is a basic need and my students have difficulty focusing and working if they are hungry.
I make sure that all of my students' needs are met to the best of my ability.
One way that I do that is by having healthy snacks in the classroom for them to eat when they get hungry during the school day. It has been costly to provide this resource daily and it is a burden on some families to donate to the classroom. My students need these snack items because they often come hungry to school or ask to bring food home so they have something to snack on at home or for over the weekend.
With your help and support, you will be providing healthy snacks for my caseload. I hate to turn them away and tell them I do not have snacks for them so this will greatly impact their academic performance. It will motivate them and allow them to focus better. If needed, they can also take these snacks home for added food for when they are out of school.
