Healthy Eating Starts Through Play!
Hooray! This project is fully funded
My Students
My kindergarten students are part of a unique, diverse classroom. I teach in a Title I school, where over 60% of students qualify for free or reduced lunch. I also have a high population of EL and special education students in my room. Learning through play is one of our most important times in the classroom. Weather it is hands on math exploration, learning about different books through seeing, feeling and doing, or through pretend play all students learn many skills throught play.
In my classroom, each student is recognized for the potential they have and I work hard at making our classroom a community where all students can learn. Each and every day my students are welcomed into the classroom with a high five, handshake or a quick dance. This helps build a community where all students feel comfortable. I also belive everyday is a new day and we start fresh each day. My students know I am in their corner and will do what I can to help them not only academically but also socially.
My Project
Students learn through play. My district believes in play and allows each kindergarten classroom time to play each day. My students have several different areas they can play in. My kitchen area (pretend play area) has play food that students have been playing with for over 15 years. This food needs to be replaced so students can actually play and make food for each other.
Through this project, I want to get food that will last for many years to come but more importantly help students see the importance of healthy eating. I have chosen sets that represent lots of fruits and vegetables and healthy choices. I have also chosen a set of food that I can use in my health lessons on sorting the different food groups.
I feel these sets will give a good variety of foods for students to play with. Through play and modeling, students can combine some of the sets to make new dishes and increase their play. These sets will also show some of the different food groups that they may not see at home. It will also give me an opportunity to help teach the importance of eating healthy while seeing true representations of food. The food will also help my students who are learning English as a second language better opportunities to learn English.
