This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My classroom is a revolving door because I am an educator at an alternative learning center. My students have made choices that may have the potential to negatively affect their academic life. They are eager to move past their mistakes and propel into the future that lies ahead of them. Despite their behavioral and socio-economic status, they are motivated to make positive decisions. As a science educator, I believe wholeheartedly, that I am educating nurses, doctors, and even welders. They are appreciative and grateful for any hands-on activities that I provide for them during the day.
My Project
I am a teacher in a low income alternative learning center. Most of students come to school hungry because of financial situations at home. The free meals the school provides are often left untouched because they are cold, small portioned, and untasty.
I have found that when my students are hungry, they do not participate during classroom sessions.
It can cause students to be disruptive which takes away valuable learning time. I try to provide my students with snacks but as we know that can become costly. With this project, I will be able to distribute healthy, nutritious snacks for my students throughout the school year. This in return will increase their attention span and decrease discipline problems because of lack of focus.
