I have the privilege of teaching at a very special school. Our kids love learning and are an absolute pleasure to work with. I've been associated with five other schools, and this one is just so outstanding--so incredibly special.
Over 85% of our children are receiving free or reduced-price lunch.
We are in a very rural part of Arkansas, deep in the Ozark hills. Many of our kids have never been more than a few hours from home. Despite poverty and geographic isolation, our kids love learning. Our school has about 200 children, K-12. I teach art and family and consumer sciences, which includes parenting, child development, interior design, sewing, and more.
My Project
I am requesting tools for healthy cooking. I would like a steamer and a stovetop griddle for my students to learn to prepare vegetables in a healthy way. I am also requesting a vegetable spiralizer for my classroom. Many of my students are unfamiliar with vegetables in general and certainly have limited knowlege of healthy cooking methods. I am also requesting tools that help with weight management. I am requesting a blood pressure monitor, oxygen and heart rate monitor, body fat measuring calipers, and a 3D model of body fat. I will use both the cooking equipment and the weight management tools during a semester-long study in Family and Consumer Sciences Classes. During this study students will monitor their health independently in journals. Students will have resources they need to cook healthy foods and monitor their own health.
