This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students reside in a rural community where 100% receive free lunch. They enjoy new challenges and experiences in education. My students are always looking for things to do after school and during lunch that occupy their talents and gifts. My children work up a heavy appetite while studying and doing various activities.
They are growing up right before my eyes with enthusiasm and excitement about current health issues and the status of the cafeteria menu.
They love to eat!
My Project
My school is in a high poverty area. We have limited choices for food and extra curricular activities. We are faced with trying to provide nutritional and healthy snack items for the children that participate in after school programs and activities. We discard a lot of food in the cafeteria because children cannot afford to pay for the extra items. Even though the students would like seconds, they are not given seconds if they do not have the funds to pay for the food. When students stay after school for tutoring and extra curricular activities, they need healthy snack items and or food that will give them quick energy. We would also like to work on a fitness program for our students.
Students will start a compost bin and garden from the food that is discarded.
They will start a garden filled with healthy foods and vegetables that will be used to make healthy snacks and salads after school. Students will also culture flower gardens and grow plants to be used for decorations for our assembly programs and beautification of our school. Students will design flower beds and create an irrigations system for their gardens. The items grown in the garden will be distributed to the students that would like seconds, but are denied due to lack of funding. A fitness program could be incorporated into our after school routines.
