I teach the AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) elective, which gives kids a leg up in school and on college and career readiness. I work with kids who have the desire and determination to go to do something after high school, but need a little extra love and support. AVID is family and the classroom is home. My classroom is a place to give my students the extra support they need to face any challenge. We work in study skills, note-taking, college and career readiness, writing, etc. We also work hard on relationship building and how we work and communicate with others. I admire my students and what they face every day. Many of my kids come from single-parent homes, have faced some sort of adversity, and will be the first in their families to go to college. I want to make sure my kids are loved and taken care of. My kids often do not think there is more for them after high school and my goal is to show them how amazing they are and how successful they can be.
My Project
These items will go a long way to helping the kids in my classroom. Currently my computer does not have speakers, so these will allow us to listen to necessary materials when needed. More than that, snacks and other items will help the kids feel safe and at home in school. Hungry kids are hard to teach and sometimes it's something small that can make them feel better. Kleenex are not provided and many classes don't have them on hand. This year we were not given cleaning supplies for our rooms, and with sickness on the rise having ways to keep the room clean will make everyone feel better. These are small items that can have a huge impact.
