Help me give my students healthier snacks and hopefully a new look on healthier alternatives! Instead of regular chips or candy, I want to replace them with pretzels, fruit squeezes, dried fruit chips and baked snacks, not fried!
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
The section of Philadelphia I teach in is a very low-economic area with minimal family involvement. Many have limited resources. However, they make up for that with their personalities and eagerness.
Many of my students come into school without previous education, minimal basic skills, and minimal supplies, but are eager and willing to work hard to learn all they can.
In order for my students to succeed and thrive, we need to have a safe and inviting environment. In order to do this, we need snacks for energy, centers that are exciting, and new, basic everyday materials that are readily available for the classroom and for home.
My Project
My students come in with a black bag from the corner store every day! They have sugar drinks, multiple bags of chips, donuts, candy, etc. I try to teach them that healthy snacks help the mind and body, but still every day like clockwork they come in with more and more unhealthy options.
I want my students to know the importance of healthy choices and how they provide energy, as opposed to the other snacks they bring, where they end up tired and overweight.
I want to introduce my students to fruits squeezes, dried fruit options, as well as slowly transition them from chips to pop corners that are baked instead of fried. The pretzels will also allow me to introduce them to hummus and alternative dips that are just as tasty!
