My students need the heart rate monitors to provide them with the opportunity to reflect upon their personal heart rate so they can physically recognize when they are exercising in their target heart rate zone.
Our elementary physical education students are amazing! They come in excited to move each and every physical education day. Students experience a diverse curriculum which incorporates a wide variety of activities. Activities are designed to build a solid foundation upon which children develop good health habits and an enjoyment of movement. Some activities include geocaching, sport stacking, tracking steps with pedometers, snowshoeing, juggling, and an array of other activities.
Our goal as a physical education department is to instill an appreciation for physical activity and it's easy to see day in and day out that our students enjoy moving!
The student body is comprised of 650, kindergarten through fourth grade students. All are excited to explore their abilities in the gymnasium and take pride in their daily efforts. They are eager to take on all challenges thrown their way and they are delighted anytime we incorporate a new way to engage them in movement opportunities.
My Project
The heart rate monitors will make a big difference in our physical education classes. While we teach our elementary students about recognizing when they are getting a good workout (i.e. sweating, breathing harder, heart beating faster) and finding their pulse, we have a challenging time discussing and utilizing target heart rate zones. We can talk about it and give good visual examples, but trying to get 30 elementary students accurate readings of their heart rate before it declines, and recorded, is difficult!
Strapless heart rate monitors will give our students real-time information about their heart rate during the activity.
This real-time information will allow students to make the necessary changes to their levels of movement to achieve their target heart rate zone for a long period of time, and on a more regular basis.
Not only will heart rate monitors provide students with accurate information about their personal activity levels, it will also afford physical education staff a less subjective view of a student's daily participation.
