My students need exercise balance balls to sit on instead of chairs!
This project expired on March 15, 2015.
Hooray! This project is fully funded
Remember when you got home from school and you would run to your backyard or run the streets with your family and friends until the street lights came on?
My students come from diverse cultures.
They are all from different parts of the world and have all found their way to Grand Rapids. In this community family is everything to them. These families make sure that the students are safe no matter where they are, even if that means the kids cannot do everything a student who lives in the suburbs could do. These sweet children cannot always play outside at their homes because they do not live in the safest area. Due to the lack of outside time these students miss out on crucial muscle development to do simple daily tasks.
Over the last decade the amount of students who are coded for ADHD has almost doubled. Parents and teachers are complaining that students are unable to focus, at the same time, children are expected to sit for longer periods of time. In order to develop a strong balance system, children need to move their body in all directions, for hours at a time. They cannot do this with new standards and time requirements from the state and our district, so we need to be able to do this all at the same time as we are learning. This is where the balance balls can come into play. These balance balls could be exchanged for the chairs of my students who cannot sit and learn without fidgeting. In order for children to learn, they need to be able to pay attention. In order to pay attention, we need to let them move.
I know that fidgeting throughout the day is a clear indicator that students are not moving enough throughout the day.
With these balance balls the students will be able to productively move, while learning the content in a non-disruptive manner.
