Despite limited resources, my students manage to find ways to bring their visions to life. They are a tight knit team in which each artist's opinions are valued and collaboration incorporates student talent from multiple disciplines. Our school is large, with over 2,000 kids - all of whom receive free or reduced lunch. Economically, they are not the richest.
Where they are rich is ingenuity, creativity, innovation, resourcefulness, high spirits, tenacity, and dedication.
I have never met a group of students more dedicated to their craft and intent on growing as scholars, artists, activist, and community leaders.
Gun violence continues to rise as do daily encounters with trauma for our youth. Students sometimes have to navigate extremely stressful situations within hours of attending school. These aromatherapy tools and flexible seating options will help facilitate Mindfulness Curriculum in our learning space this year. Every Monday, students will practice mediation and reflection as a strategy for self-regulation, community building, and personal, mental care.
With steady practice, I hope to provide students with tools that might allow them to cope with trauma, but also empower them to help others and seek change within their community, both locally and globally.
