My students are a very diverse group of children with a deep love for music.
In music class, they love anything that gets them moving-whether it is dancing or playing instruments.
For many of these children, this music class is their only exposure to the arts.
They value the opportunity to participate and learn, and have begun asking me to learn even more! This love for learning has me excited to create more complex lessons with more instruments and materials!
My Project
Students in my classroom love to play instruments. Any time that we play them, their eyes light up and a smile spreads across their face. It is quite possibly one of the best parts of my job, seeing their joy! My students love to play percussion instruments; they love the sound, they love the mechanics of them, and they love being able to work together as a group to perform a piece of music.
In October, our community was impacted by Hurricane Michael.
Many students lost their homes and everything that they knew to be their "normal." In our music class, we are working toward emotional healing through playing music. Drum circles are one way that we can do this.
With these nested tubanos, our classroom would have six more drums to add to our inventory, bringing us to a total of 12 tubanos. These drums would allow us to perform more collaborative music, as well as have times where we can use them to communicate with one another through music. Less time having to share with a partner, and more hands-on learning is what these would create.
