My students need books to help them with coping skills when faced with challenging emotions they at times are experiencing during school counseling. Some of these topics include: grief and loss, relationships, and stress.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I serve students in grades PK-5th at a small, established neighborhood school that is in a large metropolitan area yet in a close-knit and supportive community. One fourth of our school population consists of special education students and more than half are bilingual students. Approximately 90% of our students qualify for free and reduced-price lunch which designates us as a Title I School. As the campus counselor, I have the opportunity to promote social and emotional well-being among all students and equip students with the skills and tools to overcome daily challenges.
My Project
Our students come to my school counseling office with a variety of special issues and experiences. As a school counselor, I am always exploring creative and effective ways to support my students and their families. Some of the most effective ways to offer this support is through nurturing activities, theraplay, and primarily through the means they are the most familiar with at school: shared reading. I have selected a collection of books that help facilitate therapeutic and nuturing activities but also to help students during the healing process by reading sensitive stories about others who are going through similar experiences. These inspirational books have been carefully selected to reflect real-life experiences, culturally-diverse characters, and a variety of emotional and behavioral issues that many students face.
Because many of our students are Spanish-speaking, I have selected books that I can easily translate without losing the message and meaning during these emotionally-challenged times.
I have also considered a few informative books that allow me to share helpful ideas with my students' families when they reach out for assistance in enhancing their relationships with their children especially during stressful times.
I am priviledged to be able to offer a safe place for our students to regulate themselves, learn coping strategies, experience unconditional love, and to find comfort through the many healing benefits of bibliotherapy, utilizing timeless literature that will guide and comfort them.
