This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My campus consists of students from 5th through 8th grade. Many students in our student population are at or below the poverty level so we qualify for state-funded breakfast and lunches for all.
Recently, our community was hit by Hurricane Harvey and our students lost their campus, and most of their belongings which led to my role as a counselor changing to address more issues than just academic scheduling and minor disagreements between students.
In addition, many of our students were left homeless in an area struggling to rebuild.
As a result, many of our students have experienced more stress than usual. Studies show that students are more receptive to group therapy than individual or talk therapy. I would like to incorporate technology into this therapy, as many of our students do not have access to modern technology, and as such, are often more receptive when it involves technology.
My Project
We have limited office space due to losing our campus to Harvey. So, I want to create a safe and comfortable environment where the students feel welcomed and relaxed. This Is why I'm requesting bean bag chairs, to give more of a flexible seating arrangements in our therapy sessions. Our students have been through a lot both before and after Hurricane Harvey, so to help ease their nervousness and stress during our meetings; I'm requesting stress balls, linking cubes and distracting maniplatives to put their minds at ease. In this project I've also included a bluetooth speaker as another soothing technique. Soft classical and nature music will play in the background of our sessions. Studies have shown this help relieve stress and nervousness, creating a more relaxed and calming envirnoment. Our students would benefit from using technology during personal therapy sessions and group therapy sessions, so I'm requesting two laptops and two Ipads.
Enhancing my sessions with technology as well as my knowledge and high spirits will provide an experience like no other!
I would like to give students an opportunity to utilize therapeutic applications via technology to address their individual needs in my office privately. I could service more than one student at a time if I use this method. I would as like to incorporate the tablets while doing group therapy, as our population of students are more engaged when they have access to technology. The tablets and laptops are what I need to assist students in becoming all that they can be in this generation of technology. With many of my students not being able to afford the late and greatest, your generous donations will give them hope that they can succeed and over come any situation they are put in!
