We are a public school special education preschool that currently has both a morning and afternoon session (with a total current enrollment of fifteen students). We will continue to grow throughout the year and usually have ten or more students in each class by summer.
We do not have a current music program that incorporates our class at a developmentally appropriate level.
Our staff strives to provide all of our students with a wide variety of meaningful learning experiences, and we feel that a music program provided by a trained music therapist is extremely beneficial to our classroom.
Last year, through DonorsChoose.org, our students were provided with that opportunity, and the benefits were tremendous! Not only did our staff and students note the program’s success, but so did our students’ families who were also invited to participate with us!
Our students range in age from three to five years old, and we work to make our days at school as fun and enriching as we possibly can. We want our students' earliest years in school to provide an environment where they can explore, grow, and succeed to instill in them a lifelong love of learning.
My Project
Trina Rainey, a local licensed music therapist, has been providing music therapy for our special education preschool classroom weekly since the fall of 2017. Our students, classroom staff and classroom families look forward to her weekly visits and are excited to participate in and learn about all of her instruments and activities.
Through activities designed specifically to align with student IEP goals and objectives, we have seen increased joint attention, language use, social skills interactions and exploration of their musical creativity!
Each child is able to participate at their own ability level and feel success and joy during each session!
