I work in a primary classroom (grades Kindergarten to 3rd grade) where the focus is teaching the social, emotional, and behavioral skills necessary to be successful in the educational environment.
My students are outgoing, resourceful, and energetic and love learning.
They have the energy to learn and need some additional guidance on tapping into their strengths to be successful in school. In our Title I school, most students do not have access to mindfulness resources they need to develop these strengths.
Every week my class engages in social skills, yoga, and mindfulness lessons to support our social, emotional, and behavioral development. These lessons include specific instruction on how to handle our emotions, social situations, and problem solving.
Twice a week we engage in yoga classes that focus on breathing strategies, focus, following directions, and self-regulation skills.
These are essential skills people need to navigate school and social environments. New yoga mats are a necessity for the upcoming school year. We have used are current yoga mats for two school years and they desperately need to be replaced.
