I have a class full of 20 eager-to-learn kindergarten students who love to think outside the box! Many of my students did not attend preschool and are experiencing learning for the first time in a classroom setting.
My students come from a variety of different socioeconomic status backgrounds.
Our elementary is a Title I school. Over 65% of our students were declared homeless after the 2011 EF5 tornado. Our community was rebuilt and has overcome many obstacles over the last 7 years.
My Project
This project will provide our class a 1 year license to the online reading program Headsprout offered by Learning A-Z. Headsprout offers online reading support for grades K-5. My favorite part about this program is that it differentiates instruction based on each child's current reading level. Headsprout teaches nonreaders and early readers critical reading fundamentals, including phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, and basic vocabulary. Headsprout also teaches advanced readers the four main components of comprehension such as finding facts, making inferences, identifying themes, and learning vocabulary in context. This program will also provide teachers and parents automated reports on each child's progress throughout the program.
Students will use this program as a daily literacy station.
Literacy stations are a favorite time of the day for many of my students. Students rotate to different literacy stations while I take turns pulling students up to my table for small group guided reading instruction. Some of their stations include technology (computers or tablets), hands-on word work literacy tubs, writing, and explore tubs to build fine motor skills they need in order to become good writers. This program would be used for our technology station during these literacy station rotations. We live in a digital world and students are always excited to learn with technology!
