My Students

The students in my alternative school have all experienced different types of trauma in the short time they’ve been on this earth. My school serves students in grades K-12 who have been unsuccessful academically and behaviorally in the general schools. All students have been diagnosed with emotional and behavioral disorders in addition to dealing with the death of a parent, incarcerated parent(s), moving around in foster care, drugs in the home, and/or basic needs left unmet. In our alternative school setting, most academic lessons are completed on a computer-based program.

My students need headphones that work in order to listen to lessons on the computer without disturbing their classmates.

My Project

The students in my alternative education classroom complete most of their academic work on a computerized program called Apex. The lessons are geared towards their grade levels, allowing them to earn credits in the courses they will continue in their general high school once they exit our alternative program. In order to be successful, most lessons require students to listen to instruction online before completing assessments.

My students need headphones that work in order to successfully complete their online courses, without distracting their classmates.

Since students are in different grade levels and working on separate lessons, having various lessons play at once in the same classroom creates a lot of confusion.
