Our students are a diverse bunch of kids who happen to have additional challenges from intellectual disabilities and autism. Just like every elementary student, they are smart, curious, quirky, and, although they may need more help than other children, they are starting to spread their wings a little bit. They come from a wide variety of backgrounds, with some students being English Language Learners as well as having special needs.
Our students are part of a school that embraces diversity.
They are are a part of the life of the school and are active in safety patrol and recycling. They go to art, music, PE and computers with their non-disabled peers with support from special education staff.
Our school is an urban Title One school located in Atlanta, Georgia. All students in the school come from homes with a low socio-economic status, many coming from inter-generational poverty.
First of all, we are super excited about the new set of Kindle Fires that are coming our way thanks to DonorsChoose.org! These will open up so many possibilities for the students. Now we are ready for some accessories.
What we need now are some headphones that will stand up to the kids.
Kids with autism have sensory issues and tend to engage in self-stimulatory behaviors (stimming). Sadly this is often the death of our headphones as their cords get twirled or chewed. Wireless headphones would give the kiddos a chance to access their new technology without going through multiple headsets in short periods of time.
