I teach an awesome group of students from a variety of socioeconomic backgrounds and cultures. My students try hard and give their all everyday. Our school supports some of the military families from the neighboring base. I teach ELA and Reading to three blocks of students each day. I don't believe there are students who hate to read, only students who haven't found what they love to read. We are working on embracing the power of "yet". By learning it's okay to not know how to do something yet, we have room to grow and reach those goals. We are goal setters who love challenging ourselves to grow into the best person we can be.
We have also started a Military Kid's Club in our district.
When students move to a district that is next to or on the military installation, a lot of supports are already in place. Our district is unique, because it is a neighboring district about thirty to forty minutes away from post. We have a military population, but it is smaller that the closer districts. This means a lot of those support systems aren't already in place. However, we have noticed they are needed.
Two years ago I had a project funded for headphones. Our classroom received a set of twenty of these headphones. They have lasted so long and are comfortable for the students to use. I had been purchasing earbuds weekly to support the Lexia intervention software my students are using. I need to replace some of the headphones now. I would love to replace them with the same ones since we have had so much success with them.
Headphones help our students get remedial instruction on his or her individual level.
Our students are showing incredible growth with the Lexia program. Allowing them to work on target skills in one group, allows me to pull groups for additional intervention, skill practice or accelerated learning.
I appreciated the previous support from donors who provided us with these headphones. I hope you will find it in your heart to support us again. Thank you.
