Hello all! I am a first grade teacher at a Title 1 school. My school has a free and reduced lunch population of above 80%. It is a school where often times it is difficult for students to even come with all of their school supplies, be able to afford field trips, or even have clean clothes at times.
These students are the students that come to school to be loved and cared about before they are willing to let you educate them.
As I continue teaching and work to build my classroom, I am trying to build a comforting and welcoming environment. One that is homey and loving. In order to do so, there are materials and pieces of furniture that I need in order to successfully teach these students.
My Project
As our world changes and technology becomes more prevalent, education must also change. I work in a school district that is in the middle of making all students 1:1. This means that students will all have access to their own computer or in elementary, they will be assigned a Chromebook (laptop) in the classroom. Unfortunately, the funding for the computers does not fund headphones as well. We are lucky to be one of the first schools in the district to go 1:1, but we do not have the resources to purchase headphones that will not break after a few months of use.
In a high poverty school, it is not as easy for parents to supply their children with their own headphones.
By having a class set of headphones, students will be able to work on their computers without being distracted by the noise and sounds of the computers around them. Students are using computers during guided reading and guided math rotations. They use the computers to work on programs that are individualized to their current level of knowledge in both reading and math. The programs talk and make noise, which is distracting to other students in the classroom who are receiving small group instruction or trying to complete written work.
This product, Listening Center Headphones from Lakeshore, will provide students with the resource to hear and focus during their individualized instruction using technology. Without these headphones, only a handful of students have some to use and even then, they are brittle and quit working somewhat quickly.
