Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
How can we close the achievement gap if our students don't have resources to support their learning and aid them in achievement? A review of student grades and school-wide data indicate that students with disabilities are the lowest-performing sub-group at our elementary school.
The students in my classroom are primarily students with specific learning disabilities in reading and math.
Many of these students have experienced trauma in their lives and have difficulty coming to school. My classroom serves students with a range of disabilities including intellectual disabilities, other health impairments and specific learning disabilities. The typical student in my class reads at a second-grade level and many struggles with basic phonics and number sense. Seventy percent of my students are Hispanic and thirty percent are African American. All of them receive free or reduced price lunch, coming from high poverty and marginalized areas in the city of Chicago. The opportunity and achievement gaps are apparent among the student population. We have very few textbooks or curriculum in our classroom, as well as outdated furniture and no flexible seating to help these diverse learners learn in a variety of ways.
My Project
The students in my class use Chromebooks daily to help them learn. My students are diverse learners and many of them struggle to read. The computer programs they use read the material to them. However, we do not have headphones for each student to listen to their material.
Headphones will help my students learn in peace.
This will keep them less distracted so they are able to focus on their own work. We also need dry erase erases to help us with math and reading. My students currently use white boards to solve math equations and write their sight words. We do not have enough erasers so students are often sharing or using a piece of paper instead. These would really help to keep them engaged during class.
