My students need headphones! Hurricane Imra displaced many students from Puerto Rico,these students need working headphones for practicing English fluency, while all my students need them to practice reading fluency.
100% of my students are considered non-proficient in reading, the majority of these students are also from low income families. These students between the ages of 11 and 15,have all the capabilities to be successful, many just lack the motivation and self confidence to meet the potential that they all have.
20 of my students speak limited English, here after being displaced from Puerto Rico after Hurricanes Irma and Harvey.
These students will benefit from hearing themselves read and finding out their mistakes will help them grow. I have been given the opportunity to have all of these students in one class in order to meet all of their needs, including giving them a safe space to not only learn English, but be able to ask questions and celebrate every triumph, of which there are many. These students have limited technology experience, several had to be taught to turn on a desktop computer. My other students will be able to hear themselves read aloud, they will be able to increase their fluency and thus reading comprehension.
My Project
All of my students will benefit having new and working headphones! My students will be able to use their reading program correctly, increasing reading fluency as well as their English Language Learning program to increase English speaking fluency. Right now we have to move the headphones around from computer to computer, depending on which pair will work for what is needed that day. With new headphones, all time can be spent doing the program, lowering student frustration as well as increasing the use of programs and confidence. My students would be very grateful to have these headphones in our classroom.
