My students are bright and curious young learners who come to school each day trying to do their best. They attend a Title 1 school. About half of the students in my school are in the process of learning a second language, and many came to this country recently as refugees. These students are not only learning a new language but also trying to adjust to life in a new country and recover from the trauma they faced.
As a teacher in a low-income, high poverty, and refugee school with a lot of English language learners, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom.
Despite the many challenges my students face, challenges that make it more difficult for them to get a good eduction, they come ready to learn and do their best.
As a teacher with over 7 languages in my class I try my best to give every student everything possible to be successful and learn!
My classroom has a large number of English Language learners, about half of my students are currently learning English at different ability levels, and many are below proficiency in reading. As a school we have programs in place specifically designed to help all students, but especially those who are learning English as their second language.
There are over 7 languages in my class, some students have been here less than a year.
The ability to achieve their full potential is my goal. I am trying to get a classroom set of headphones so my students are able to use the programs we have in place fully. As of now students are trying to listen to the lessons (which are at their individual level) while everyone else has different lessons going. In addition, part of the programs have them practice speaking and reading, so they are trying to record over other students.
Having these headphones will allow students to be more successful in using the programs to learn English, practice reading, and be successful in their lives, which is my main goal as a teacher.
