Resilient, eager, and hungry for new experiences, the 7th grade students in my science class are ready for more! They have overcome many obstacles this school year. They are maturing and realizing that the world is larger than our little county. Until this point, they were rarely able to experience STEM, coding, or robotics. Now that their feet are wet, they are hungry for more opportunities in these areas. Unfortunately, the majority of my students come from low income households. Many do not have internet access at home and only get access to technology experiences through the school.
Bluetooth headphones and a Sphero in our classroom will allow students to work towards learning both independently and in cooperative groups, continue improving coding skills, and complete STEM projects.
Headphones will help the students focus on their individual tasks without disturbing the learning of his or her classmates. A Sphero will advance the opportunities for students to experience activities in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.
My Project
With the amazing DonorsChoose.org program, our classroom has been blessed with four new Chromebooks. I personally purchased one set of Bluetooth headphones, however, I need three more sets to have an effective learning station for my students. I will also be able to set up another STEM station with the Sphero. Students will be able to design and build obstacle courses. They will code Sphero to navigate through those courses while working in cooperative groups. Our district has an amazing high school robotics program, and my hope is to spark interest in that area early, giving my students a head start. Many students are intimated when they hear the word coding. I want them to see what amazing things can be accomplished, and I also hope to inspire more female students to become interested in coding as well.
