Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My scholars are a lively bunch to say the least. We talk at length about how social studies and history connects to their lives, and they get fired up when those connections are made. I love seeing the look on their faces when they learn something new and valuable to their own lives.
I've never had a group of students that consists of mostly aspiring doctors, lawyers, and surgeons.
Their passion does remind me to bring my A game every day, though. Our school serves a population of mostly students of color and first-generation Americans in a historically disadvantaged neighborhood in Denver, Colorado. Most of my students qualify for free or reduced lunch, but that doesn't stop them from wanting to learn to and through college.
My Project
This year we've done a research project on a social movement of student's choice, but not being able to access documentaries, interviews, podcasts, etc, readily was a hindrance. I do not want technical issues to hinder the exponential learning capacity of my scholars. They deserve every opportunity.
I would love to ensure my students have the ability to use the durable headphones I've requested in order to access multimedia, and create a more effective blended learning classroom environment.
My classroom next year will be "1-to-1" students to Chromebooks. I am looking forward to running a paper classroom next school year.
