My Students

I teach 6th grade English and Social Studies. I have students who are regular education, special education, and ELL learners. I have two classes, one with 26 and the other with 27. Many of my students are level 1 and 2 ELL learners that are just coming to the United States from countries like Nigeria, Venezuela, Honduras, The Dominican Republic, Cambodia and Puerto Rico. My students love to work with technology and are starting a research project were they will be competing against other classes in the school.

One of the things that I love about my class is that they are very diverse, they are different and that they all have a story that is very different then many other students, and they find a way to get along and work together.

They are hard working students, that have not always been given the resources and encouragement to strive and succeed. These are the future leaders of tomorrow and need to be given the same opportunities so that they are aware of what they can be and just not what they see around them.

My Project

These students are working on their National History Day Projects. This years theme is triumph and tragedy. Student have to pick a triumph and tragedy in history and will have to find primary and secondary topics to back up their thesis. Since, I have many students who are level 1 and 2 ELL, their English proficiency levels are lower and it takes them much longer to read and comprehend passages. By getting the headphones students will be able to use the headphones to translate and help them read the material, while others will be able to watch videos, and listen to documents about their topic.
