Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

When I first came to Otis Elementary to teach music in 2002, I walked into a nearly empty classroom. There were no instruments for the students, no music books, no stereo, and no other music related learning materials for me to use. But there was a piano. I played it often during the students' lessons, whether it was for demonstration or to accompany them during singing. It surprised me how amazed they were at watching me play. I had had many students who studied privately at the rural parochial school where I previously worked. But most of these inner city children at my new position come from low-income families who most likely do not have pianos in their homes. More than three years later, the music room at Otis Elementary has seen some changes. Thanks to a generous arts grant through the school board and a principal who is enthusiastic about the arts, we now have Orff instruments, a CD player, recorders, risers, music stands, a full keyboard lab, and more! I am very thankful for the monies that have come our way, but with 650 students in the school, the equipment inevitably sees wear-and-tear every school year that passes. We are desperately in need of new headphones for the keyboards. Due to the size of my room, it is next to impossible to work on the keyboards without them. The students love the piano unit so much, and we would all be so thankful to have sturdier headphones on which to work.
