I teach in a low-income neighborhood school that was, unfortunately, in the Hurricane Harvey impact zone. Our community received over 50 inches of water in about a 24-hour period. Many of our students are English language learners which can be challenging. These students benefit from hands-on learning which helps foster language acquisition and mathematics skills.
Last school year, before school started, Hurricane Harvey hit our area and water was in 80 to 90 percent of the homes in our town.
My children have very little to begin the school year with. I would like for them to have as normal of a school year as possible. I love teaching these children because they are eager to learn even with all the devastation they have seen in their short lives.
My Project
My students love to learn, and among the most favorite activities in my classroom are the computer and the tablets. Last year I was lucky to find some inexpensive headphones before school started but they only lasted one school year. This year, I would like to have some headphones which are better quality and that will last longer.
My students, who are mostly English language learners, learn so much on the computer by hearing language.
These quality headphones will help them so much by drowning out classroom noise so they can concentrate on learning. I am excited about this upcoming school year and look forward to another year of memory making with exceptional students!
