My students need headphones to learn with our learning apps. This is to help them learn individually and with partners. The headphones we currently have are very worn out and some have broken wires.
Learning two languages in a day has long-term impacts. My 5-6 year old students are learning what it is like to be in school: learning in whole group, small group, with partners, and independently throughout a whole day in school. For some, it may be their first time away from the comfort of their homes and their immediate family members.
Michael Gove's quote captures some of the reasons why: "Learning [another] language, and the culture that goes with it, is one the most useful things we can do to broaden the empathy and imaginative sympathy and cultural outlook of children."
My students are learning to what it means to learn together, share, and grow with each other. Moreover, they are doing all this while juggling with learning two languages in a day (first half of the day in full Vietnamese and the other half full English). Each and every day, I am proud at all of them for their openness and for their resilience.
My Project
With broken headphones and ones that do not work well, my students are faced with a mixture of sounds coming from small group work, partner work and other devices. This environment makes it challenging for my students to focus on what they need to work on.
These headphones will really support the students with their focus when learning through our apps on iPads and computers.
They will allow students to listen to books being read to them and their partners. Friends can share a text without getting distracted by noise from another partner group.
Also, my classroom environment would benefit with noise level reduction from technology. In turn, our whole class can benefit from a more conducive learning environment where students can focus on the tasks at hand.
