I feel I am one of the luckiest teachers. My third graders live in a large city and see many things many of us would never have to experience, yet they come to school every day ready to learn! Many of the students come directly from other countries and often are still learning our language when they enter our classrooms. Others live most of their lives wondering when their next meal will come, and some feel thankful that they have one parent who is home with them most nights. My students are unique and I embrace their uniqueness and hold them to the high standards they deserve.
Our school district is large with fourteen elementary schools and most classrooms have 28-30 students.
As you can imagine, monies are tight and often it is left to the teachers to find creative ways to teach the children. NWES is unique in that ALL of our teachers and administration want the best for our students. Often you find teachers chatting with parents and families after school with smiles on their faces. It's because we LOVE our community and truly feel like a family.
My Project
The students in my class have a variety of needs and learning styles. In order to reach all my students on a given day, my students will use individualized lessons on computers during reading and/or math as a center in our learning block. Students will also use the computers for research, watching videos about world history or science in action. Some of my students use the laptops as their reading device as well. Programs with high-interest books will read to my students who are several grade levels behind while highlighting the words to help the student see the words that are being read.
Headphones would help my students tune out distractions around them while listening and interacting with their books or lessons on computers.
It would allow me to reinforce skills the students are learning, and help my students read high-interest books.
