Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
What makes my students special? Well to me, what makes them special is that they are MY students! Every year brings a new crop of curious, creative, intelligent students bursting with potential and there is not a day that goes by that they don't amaze me in some way. I teach 5th-grade students in a school that is in a high poverty district (84% receive free or reduced cost lunch) and where many students are in the process of learning English as their 2nd language (50% of students are transitional/bilingual speakers). Despite these challenges, the students here (and the community) place a high value on education and they work hard every single day toward achieving their goals.
These students are truly wonderful to work with and I wouldn't change anything about the students that I teach.
In our school, we build close relationships with our students in order to teach them better. We use what we know about our students to develop their strengths and build upon their weaknesses. Every child is unique and learns in a different way and we use what we know to support student growth.
My Project
In my school, we started the year remote learning, 100% online. Now we have switched over to a hybrid model. This means that I have half my students in the classroom and half of them at home on zoom. Zooming with kids in person and kids at home has been challenging. One of the challenges is the constant distractions and noise happening at home and school. This is especially hard for kids who don’t own headphones. We also use several educational tech programs that can be quite noisy. Kids who don’t have headphones find it difficult to use these programs as intended.
I am hoping that these headphones will provide a better experience for my students.
The headphones will help them continue to interact with their peers and the curriculum, whether they are in school or at home.
